Carl "Bryan" Nelson, 64, Hawthorne, WI resident, died Wednesday, January 3, 2018 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 13, 1953 in Ashland, WI to C. Franklin "Bud" and Virginia (Lentz) Nelson.

Bryan graduated from the South Shore High School in 1971. Bryan was a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala where he worked in the Agriculture Department soil mapping throughout the country. He was a retired journeyman carpenter with Union Carpenter's Local 361, retiring after forty-two years of service. Bryan married Evelyn Johnson on October 2, 1982 in Port Wing, WI and they celebrated thirty-five years of marriage.

Bryan was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed farming, was a master gardener and loved the challenge of building something awesome out of little to nothing. He also was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. For many years he and his family sold Christmas trees in Superior. Bryan will also be remembered for his love for cats and was known as the "Cat Whisperer". Bryan's great sense of humor, storytelling and jokes entertained and amused all those who knew him.

Bryan was born into a large family and married into a large family. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; one daughter, Sheri (Carter) Nelson, Hermantown, MN; two grandchildren, Terri (Shane) Kuhlmey, Moose Lake, MN and Alan (Donna) Nelson, Cotton, MN; four great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Taylor and Megan Dagger and Janessa Kuhlmey; five sisters, Barbara Nelson, Reno, NV, Sue (Tom) Johnson, Traverse City, MI, Arlene (Paul) Tammaro, Cupertino, CA, Jeanette (Hans Gutterman) Nelson, St. Paul, MN and Colette (Kemal) Sazil, San Antonio, TX; three brothers, Doug (Nancy) Nelson, Superior, WI, Andrew Nelson, Minneapolis, MN and Steven (Diana) Garz, La Grande CA; mother and stepfather, Virginia and Don Garz; sisters and brothers-in-law, Peg (Tom) Spehar, Karen (Tom) House, Tom Johnson and Jeff Johnson; nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, C. Franklin "Bud" Nelson, mother-in-law Billie Marie Johnson and brother-in-law Norman (Sue) Johnson.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Jonathan Sande and the 9 West Staff of Essentia Health St. Mary's Hospital for the wonderful care they gave to Bryan and his family.

A Celebration of Bryan's Life will be held from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 13, 2018 with a Time of Remembrance service at 1:00 PM at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5th Street, Superior with Pastor Sarah Kerkes officiating.
