Minnesota and Wisconsin this weekend will allow adults to fish without a fishing license, although in Minnesota you have to bring a kid along with you.

Wisconsin’s Free Fishing Weekend is Jan. 16-17. Anglers can fish all water bodies in the state where there is an open season. All other fishing regulations apply, such as limits on the number and size of fish you can keep and any seasons when you must release certain fish.

In Minnesota, Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend runs Saturday, Jan. 16, through Monday, Jan. 18 when adults who bring a kid age 15 or under can fish for free (the kids can fish free, too!) with no fishing license necessary.

The Minnesota rule applies to spearing as well as angling. Check the DNR’s page at dnr.state.mn.us/gofishing/learn-ice-fish.html for more information about ice fishing.
