The Bayfield Chamber & Visitor Bureau has canceled the 2021 Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race in order to avoid drawing crowds to the area during the pandemic.
The 26th annual race would have taken place Feb. 6-7. The Chamber & Visitor Bureau made the decision to cancel the event for the same reasons it canceled the 2020 Bayfield Apple Festival, according to a news release.
"With the main purpose of this event being to draw spectators, the safety of Bayfield area residents, employees and visitors is at risk during this COVID-19 pandemic," the release read. "We cannot afford to gamble the health of our residents, employees and visitors."
Bayfield's population is 487. Meanwhile, Bayfield County does not have an intensive care unit and only has three ventilators.
Each February the event attracts mushers and families from across the Midwest. The main races include a 10-dog 80-mile race and a 6-dog 60-mile race. The events also include short family and youth races as well as a 40-mile sportsmens' race.
