A little way down Highway 35, past the main entrance to Pattison State Park, past County Road B, is the road to Little Manitou Falls. I like to think of it as the secret Pattison State Park.

After a quick drive from Superior, I made it out to Pattison State Park Sunday, Oct. 11 . The main lot by Big Manitou Falls was packed, possibly due to the fact the Packers were on a bye week and the Vikings played Sunday night, so I continued on to the secret spot. I turned down the road and pulled into the parking lot to see only three other cars there.

Since there weren’t many people around, I grabbed my tripod and hiked down to get a few shots of the Black River flowing over Little Manitou Falls.

Locking the camera on a tripod allows for the photos to be taken at a slower shutter speed, which smooths the waters rushing over the falls. It's a fun technique that takes a little trial and error to get the right look.

It turned into a nice afternoon out in nature capturing the park's “secret” beauty.
