Due to unusual bear behavior, access is not allowed on all trails and beaches on Oak Island in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Overnight docking for self-contained boaters remains open; however, park officials warn boaters to be vigilant about proper food storage and eat and cook only on your boat.
A resident bear on the island is following people and ignoring attempts to scare it away. The bear recently repeatedly approached Park Service maintenance staff and refused to leave. Trained staff are now using deterrence techniques on the bear to discourage future interactions with humans.
Oak Island also was hard hit by a recent windstorm.
