Superior man charged with stealing from Challenge Center

A Superior man who allegedly stole gift cards and cash from the lockbox of a Challenge Center residential home waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday, Feb. 27 in Douglas County Circuit Court.

Trevor Lucas Raney, 20, faces five felony theft counts, four counts of identity theft and one misdemeanor count of theft from employer. He was released on a $2,500 signature bond and ordered to have no contact with the Challenge Center, its employees or the clients he reportedly stole from.

According to the criminal complaint, Raney was an employee at the residential home in January when cash and a gift card belonging to clients were stolen from a locked box. The gift card was used 11 times at Superior businesses for purchases ranging from 54 cents to $268, according to the complaint. The total amount stolen, including gift cards and cash, was $1,286.65.

Raney admitted to Superior Police Officer Joel Markon that he had stolen from the box at the Challenge Center. He said he didn't know why he did it.

Each of the felony counts carries a maximum penalty of six years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000. Raney's next court appearance was set for April 22.
