UWS ROUND-UP: Praska, Ruehl earn track honors

Kelli Praska and Svenja Ruehl picked up women’s track and field UMAC Player of the Week awards Monday.

Praska, from Eagan, Minn., placed fourth overall and third among DIII athletes in the 800-meter run at the St. Thomas Showcase then won the mile at the Yellowjacket Open Saturday, clocking in at 5:18 to beat the nearest competitor by two seconds.

Ruehl won three events over the weekend, including the long jump both days and the triple jump on Saturday.

Ruehl followed up by jumping 11.19 meters (36-8.5) to win the triple jump on Saturday, placing her 36th in DIII.

UWS will compete in the “Ole” Women’s Invitational at St. Olaf College at 4 p.m. today.

Women’s hockey

Despite outshooting St. Scholastica 50-18, UWS lost 5-1 to the Saints Tuesday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The Yellowjackets scored first on Lexie Weiss’ third goal of the season with assists from Kelly Cockerill and Agnese Apsite.

The Saints scored the rest of the goals, including two by Rachel Anderson, the first of the season by Lindsey Wright and Abby Sawyer’s 17th goal of the season.

UWS (14-9-2, including 0-4-2 over the last six games) will play UW-Eau Claire in the opening round of the WIAC playoffs Feb. 23-24 with the site still to be determined.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: UWS leads the all-time series with CSS 9-5-1, but suffered its first loss at Mars Lakeview Arena, where it was 6-0 all-time before Tuesday’s game. … UWS was 10-1-1 when it scored the first goal.

Milestone

With a goal Saturday against UW-Stevens Point, Mikayla Goodin recorded the 41st goal and 81st point of her Yellowjacket career, moving her into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time women’s hockey list in both categories.

She trails Kiara De Kezel (2011-15) by one goal for fifth on the goals list and Lindsay Bennett (2003-07) by three points for fifth on the points list.

Goodin is two assists from reaching the top 10 in all-time assists, as well.

Moving on up

With one game remaining in the regular season, Hailey Kontny sits seventh all-time on the Yellowjacket women’s basketball all-time scoring list with 1,153 points.

The former Superior Spartan trails Connie Urmanski (2009-13) by 30 points for sixth on the list.

UWS hosts North Central at 5 p.m. Saturday.
