SUPERIOR — The number of new cases of COVID-19 continued to decline over the last week, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Wednesday, June 22.
The seven-day average of new cases in Wisconsin was 1,422 on Wednesday, down from 1,471 on June 15. The figure measures the average number of new cases per day over the previous week. A decrease indicates the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the state is going down, according to DHS.
Hospitalizations as a result of COVID-19 fell to 412 people, DHS reported Wednesday, down from 428 on June 15 based on a rolling seven-day average.
Among the people hospitalized, 54 were being treated in intensive care units, down slightly from 54 the previous week. For the two-week period ending June 21, 12.1% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were being treated in Wisconsin ICUs, DHS said.
An additional 29 people died from complications related to COVID-19 statewide since June 15, the data showed, bringing the total to 13,104. Among those who died was one person each in Rusk and Taylor counties.

Statewide, an additional 9,885 new cases were reported since June 15. The total number of cases across the state was 1,508,240 Wednesday.
Closer to home, an additional 256 people in Northwestern Wisconsin tested positive for COVID-19 since June 15, DHS said.
They were reported as follows: 64 in Douglas County; 32 in Ashland County; 29 in Burnett County; 28 in Price County; 26 in Washburn County; 24 in Bayfield County; 16 in Iron County; 15 in Sawyer County; 14 in Rusk County; and eight in Taylor County.
About 61.4% of Wisconsin's population is fully vaccinated.
