SUPERIOR — Hospitalizations have started to tick upward as the number of new infections from COVID-19 continued to climb across the state over the last seven days, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Wednesday, April 27.
The state experienced a 56% increase in the number of people who tested positive for the virus since April 20, DHS reported.
The seven-day average of new cases in Wisconsin was 1,159 on Wednesday, up from 762 on April 20. The figure measures the average number of new cases per day over the previous week. An increase indicates the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the state is going up, according to DHS.
Hospitalizations as a result of COVID-19 rose to 213 people, DHS reported Wednesday, up from 194 on April 20 based on a rolling seven-day average.
Among the people hospitalized, 29 were being treated in intensive care units, up from 26 the previous week. For the two-week period ending April 26, 14.4% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were being treated in Wisconsin ICUs, DHS said.

An additional 13 people died from complications related to COVID-19 statewide since April 20, the data showed, bringing the total to 12,881. Rusk and Washburn counties reported the deaths of one resident each.
Statewide, an additional 7,836 new cases were reported since April 20. The total number of cases across the state was 1,412,793 Wednesday.
Closer to home, an additional 148 people in Northwestern Wisconsin tested positive for COVID-19 since April 20, DHS said.
They were reported as follows: 58 in Douglas County; 21 in Washburn County; 20 in Bayfield County; 11 in Rusk County; nine each in Burnett and Sawyer counties; seven in Ashland County; six each in Price and Taylor counties; and one in Iron County.
About 61% of Wisconsin's population is fully vaccinated.
