Douglas County surpasses 3,000 COVID-19 cases

Thirty-three additional cases reported in Douglas County Saturday pushed the county over 3,000 cumulative cases. The news came as the state reported its lowest single-day case count since September.

Douglas County passed 3,000 total cases of COVID-19, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Saturday, Dec. 26.

The county added 33 cases Saturday, bringing its total to 3,005, DHS said.

Douglas County was one of three counties in Northwestern Wisconsin to report cases Saturday. Ashland County added seven new cases and Rusk County added three, DHS said.

The new cases were among 632 reported Saturday, bringing the state's overall tally to 468,531, DHS said. It's the lowest single-day case count the state has recorded since Sept. 14, when the state added 714 cases, according to DHS figures.

The seven-day average of positive cases was 1,882, a figure that has dropped since it reached a high of 6,563 cases on Nov. 18.

The number of negative tests in the state was 2,330,080, an increase of 5,261 from the previous day.

The deaths of four people from complications related to COVID-19 were reported statewide Saturday, DHS said. The total number of Wisconsinites who have died of COVID-19 is 4,683. Overall, 1% of those who have contracted the virus have died.

An additional 31 people were hospitalized because of the virus Saturday. Across the state, 1,243 people are currently hospitalized because of COVID-19. The total number of people receiving treatment in intensive care units is 260. DHS reported that 81% of the state's available hospital beds are occupied. Overall, 4% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized.

Saturday's report also showed that 93% of the people who have tested positive for the virus have recovered. That means 6%, or 30,331 cases, are currently active.
