SUPERIOR — The total number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 dropped 8% since July 6 compared to the two-week period from June 22 to July 6, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Wednesday, July 20.
While the number of hospitalizations rose by 37% since July 6, the number of new deaths from COVID-19 declined 37% compared to the two-week period between June 22 and July 6, DHS reported.
The seven-day average of new cases in Wisconsin was 1,608 on Wednesday, up from 1,201 on July 6. The figure measures the average number of new cases per day over the previous week. An increase indicates the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the state is going up, according to DHS.
Hospitalizations as a result of COVID-19 was at 472, up from 427 on July 6 based on a rolling seven-day average, DHS reported Wednesday.
Among the people hospitalized, 50 were being treated in intensive care units, up from 49 on July 6. For the two-week period ending Wednesday, 9.8% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were being treated in Wisconsin ICUs, DHS said.

An additional 33 people died from complications related to COVID-19 statewide since July 6, the data showed, bringing the total to 13,189. Among those who died were one person each in Burnett and Washburn counties.
Statewide, an additional 19,366 new cases were reported since July 6. The total number of cases across the state was 1,548,630 Wednesday.
Closer to home, an additional 597 people in Northwestern Wisconsin tested positive for COVID-19 since July 6, DHS said.
They were reported as follows: 105 in Sawyer County; 104 in Douglas County; 69 in Washburn County; 58 in Rusk County; 55 in Bayfield County; 49 each in Ashland and Burnett counties; 43 in Taylor County; 33 in Iron County; and 32 in Price County.
About 61.5% of Wisconsin's population is fully vaccinated.
