Two residents of Northwestern Wisconsin died from complications related to COVID-19, according to the state Department of Health Services report Friday, Nov. 20.

The people who died were residents of Ashland and Sawyer counties. Their deaths mark the eighth for Ashland County and the seventh for Sawyer County since the pandemic began.

They were among 78 people statewide whose deaths were reported Friday. The total number of Wisconsinites who have died from COVID-19 is 2,954. Overall, about 1% of people who have contracted the virus in Wisconsin have died, DHS said.

A total of 230 people in Northwestern Wisconsin tested positive for COVID-19 Friday. The cases were reported as follows: 83 in Douglas County; 30 in Taylor County; 28 in Burnett County; 26 in Sawyer County; 20 in Washburn County; 16 in Price County; 14 in Ashland County; nine in Bayfield County; and four in Iron County.

DHS reduced Rusk County's total by four cases Friday. Officials have said they will correct errors when they find them.

The new cases were among 6,473 reported statewide Friday, bringing the total to 344,945, DHS said. The seven-day average of positive cases was 6,254, compared to 727 on Sept. 1, DHS said.

The number of negative tests in the state was 2,062,191, an increase of 12,665 from the previous day.

An additional 190 people were hospitalized because of the virus Friday. Across the state, 2,104 people are currently hospitalized because of COVID-19. Overall, about 5% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized.

Friday's report also showed that 77% of the people who have tested positive for the virus have recovered. That means 22%, or 75,649 cases, are currently active.
