Nine counties reported new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, Sept. 18, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

Douglas County recorded eight new cases, while Rusk County added five, DHS said. Bayfield County reported three new cases; Price, Sawyer and Washburn counties added two each; and Ashland and Taylor counties recorded one new case each.

Burnett County reported four new cases and one death Friday, according to DHS. It is the county's third death related to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

Despite rising case counts in the county, the Douglas County Health Department said Wednesday officials have "not seen a surge in positive cases among school-age children." However, the health department is monitoring illnesses and absences among children.

The new cases in Northwestern Wisconsin were among 2,533 reported throughout the state Friday, DHS said, setting a record for the highest number of cases reported in one day. The state has set new one-day records for the number of cases five times so far in the month of September.
