Nine counties reported new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

Douglas County reported six cases, while Burnett County reported five, DHS said. Bayfield and Taylor counties each added two cases, while Price, Rusk, Sawyer and Washburn counties each reported one.

Ashland County recorded three new cases and one death from COVID-19, DHS said. The death reported Wednesday is the county's second related to COVID-19. Officials would not tell Duluth Media Group the person's age, but said the person was at least 65 years old.

The new cases in Northwestern Wisconsin were among 1,408 reported throughout the state Wednesday, DHS said, bringing the total number of cases to 92,712. Of the tests reported, 11.5% were positive. The 7-day average for positive tests was 14.1%.

Eight additional people died, putting the overall number of deaths in the state at 1,228, DHS said. Overall, 2% of cases have resulted in death, according to DHS data.

The number of negative tests in the state was 1,295,313, an increase of 10,788 from the day before.

An additional 48 people were hospitalized because of the virus Wednesday, DHS reported. There are currently 342 Wisconsinites hospitalized because of the virus. Overall, 7% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized. DHS has said it doesn't know the hospitalization history for 35% of people who tested positive.

Tuesday's report showed that 87% of people who tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered. That means about 12%, or 10,839 cases, are active in the state.

Douglas County

  • Active cases: 37
  • Deaths: 0

  • Total negative tests: 6,932

Iron County

  • Active cases: 13
  • Deaths: 1
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 136
  • Total negative tests: 1,428

Price County

  • Active cases: 2
  • Deaths: 0
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 40
  • Total negative tests: 2,367

Rusk County

  • Active cases: 15
  • Deaths: 1
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 40
  • Total negative tests: 2,050

Sawyer County

  • Active cases: 15
  • Deaths: 1
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 186
  • Total negative tests: 4,267

Taylor County

  • Active cases: 39
  • Deaths: 3
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 139
  • Total negative tests: 2,551

Washburn County

  • Active cases: 9
  • Deaths: 1
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 84
  • Total negative tests: 2,623
