89 people test positive, 2 die from COVID-19 in Northwestern Wisconsin Dec. 27

The people who died were residents of Iron County.

Two residents of Iron County died from complications related to COVID-19, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Sunday, Dec. 27.

Their deaths bring the total in Iron County to 15 since the pandemic began.

They were among nine people whose deaths were reported statewide Sunday. The total number of people who have died of COVID-19 is 4,692. Overall, 1% of those who have contracted the virus have died.

A total of 89 Northwestern Wisconsin residents tested positive for COVID-19 Sunday, DHS said. They were reported as follows: 17 each in Sawyer and Taylor counties; 13 in Washburn County; 10 each in Bayfield and Price counties; seven in Douglas County; five in Ashland County; four each in Burnett and Rusk counties; and two in Iron County.

The new cases were among 2,287 reported Sunday, bringing the state's overall tally to 470,818, DHS said. The seven-day average of positive cases was 1,948, a figure that has dropped since it reached a high of 6,563 cases on Nov. 18.

The number of negative tests in the state was 2,332,695, an increase of 2,615 from the previous day.

An additional 95 people were hospitalized because of the virus Sunday. Across the state, 1,098 people are currently hospitalized because of COVID-19. The total number of people receiving treatment in intensive care units is 240. DHS reported that 78% of the state's available hospital beds are occupied. Overall, 4% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized.

Sunday's report also showed that 93% of the people who have tested positive for the virus have recovered. That means 6%, or 29,791 cases, are currently active.
