75 more people test positive, 2 die from COVID-19 in Northwestern Wisconsin Oct. 15

Burnett County reported two additional deaths Thursday; state set another one-day record for positive cases.

Two people in Burnett County died from complications related to COVID-19, according to data released Thursday, Oct. 15 by the state Department of Health Services.

They were among 17 people whose deaths were reported Thursday by DHS. The total number of Wisconsinites who have died from the virus is 1,553, DHS said. Overall, 1% of people who contracted the virus in Wisconsin have died, DHS data shows.

New cases were reported as follows: 17 in Price County; 15 in Taylor County; 11 in Sawyer County; seven each in Douglas and Washburn counties; six in Rusk County; five each in Bayfield and Burnett counties; and two in Ashland County. DHS reduced Iron County's total positive cases by one. Officials have said they will correct errors in the data as they find them.

The positive cases in Northwestern Wisconsin were among a record 3,747 reported in the state Thursday, pushing the total to 162,325. The percentage of positive cases over the last seven days was 20.8%.

The number of negative tests in the state was 1,579,844, an increase of 11,455 from the day before.

An additional 138 people were hospitalized because of the virus Thursday. There are currently 1,017 Wisconsinites hospitalized because of the virus. Overall, about 6% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized.

Thursday's report also showed that 79% of the people who have tested positive for the virus have recovered. That means 20%, or 33,160 cases, are currently active.
