2 people dead, a third death suspected from COVID-19 in Northwestern Wisconsin

Three of the eight deaths reported statewide April 20 occurred in the northwest region.

An additional eight deaths from COVID-19 were reported statewide in Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 20, including one person in both Douglas and Sawyer counties, bringing the total to 6,718, the Department of Health Services said.

Overall, 1.1% of people who have contracted the virus have died. One person in Burnett County who probably died of COVID-19 was confirmed to have the disease at the time of death.

An additional 35 Northwestern Wisconsin residents tested positive for COVID-19 , DHS reported Tuesday.

They were reported as follows: 19 in Douglas County; five in Sawyer County; four in Burnett County; two in both Ashland and Washburn counties; one each in Bayfield, Rusk and Taylor counties. No new cases were reported in Iron and Price counties.

Statewide, an additional 805 cases were reported Tuesday, DHS said, bringing the total to 591,636.

The seven-day average of positive COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin dipped slightly from Monday but remained above 700. On Tuesday, the figure was 714. The seven-day average of positive cases measures the average number of new cases per day over the previous week.

An overall decrease in the seven-day average of positive cases indicates the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the state is also going down, according to DHS.

The number of negative tests in the state was 2,806,631 Tuesday, an increase of 3,510.

An additional 100 people have been hospitalized because of the virus since Monday, bringing the total to 28,694. Overall, 4.8% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized. One person in each Douglas and Sawyer counties was hospitalized after contracting COVID-19, according to Tuesday's data.

Tuesday's report also showed that 97.3% of the people who have tested positive for the virus have recovered. That means 1.5%, or 8,972 cases, are currently active.

DHS also reports that 3,920,796 doses of vaccine have been administered by Tuesday with 2,350,330 Wisconsin residents, 40.4% of the population, receiving at least one dose of vaccine, and 1,635,592 people completing the vaccine series.
