134 more people test positive, 1 dies from COVID-19 in Northwestern Wisconsin on Dec. 2

The person who died was a resident of Douglas County.

A Douglas County resident died from complications related to COVID-19, the state Department of Health Services reported Wednesday, Dec. 2.

The death is the sixth in Douglas County since the pandemic began. The person was among 82 people whose deaths were reported statewide Wednesday. The total number of Wisconsinites who have died from COVID-19 is 3,502. Overall, about 1% of people who have contracted the virus in Wisconsin have died, DHS said.

A total of 134 people in Northwestern Wisconsin tested positive for COVID-19 Wednesday, DHS said. The cases were reported as follows: 26 in Douglas County; 19 in Price County; 17 each in Ashland and Taylor counties; 16 in Rusk County; 13 in Bayfield County; 10 in Burnett County; eight in Washburn County; five in Sawyer County; and three in Iron County.

The new cases were among 3,777 reported statewide Wednesday, bringing the total to 395,090, DHS said. The seven-day average of positive cases was 3,664. The figure has been declining since Nov. 18 when it reached 6,563 cases.

The number of negative tests in the state was 2,162,616, an increase of 6,206 from the previous day.

An additional 197 people were hospitalized because of the virus Wednesday. Across the state, 1,780 people are currently hospitalized because of COVID-19. Overall, 4% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized.

Wednesday's report also showed that 82% of the people who have tested positive for the virus have recovered. That means 17%, or 65,926 cases, are currently active.
