113 people test positive, 2 die from COVID-19 in Northwestern Wisconsin Dec. 31

The people who died were residents of Douglas and Sawyer counties.

Two Northwestern Wisconsin residents died from complications related to COVID-19, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Thursday, Dec. 31.

Douglas and Sawyer counties each reported the deaths of one resident. The people who died bring the total in each county to 17 in Douglas County and 11 in Sawyer County, respectively.

They were among 41 people whose deaths were reported statewide Thursday, bringing the total to 4,859. Overall, 1% of those who have contracted the virus have died.

A total of 113 Northwestern Wisconsin residents tested positive for COVID-19 Thursday, DHS said. They were reported as follows: 23 in Douglas County; 16 each in Ashland and Washburn counties; 15 in Sawyer counties; 14 in Price County; 12 in Bayfield County; eight in Rusk County; six in Burnett County; two in Iron County; and one in Taylor County.

The new cases were among 3,810 reported Thursday, bringing the state's overall tally to 481,102, DHS said. The seven-day average of positive cases was 2,101.

The number of negative tests in the state was 2,350,669, an increase of 5,898 from the previous day.

An additional 143 people were hospitalized because of the virus Thursday. Across the state, 1,074 people are currently hospitalized because of COVID-19. The total number of people receiving treatment in intensive care units is 244. DHS reported that 81% of the state's available hospital beds are occupied. Overall, 4% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized.

Thursday's report also showed that 93% of the people who have tested positive for the virus have recovered. That means 6%, or 28,607 cases, are currently active.
