YOUTH: Modern Woodmen winners announced

Area students competed in a speech contest sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America, a national provider of fraternal financial services and programs.

Prior to the contest, the students had already won first, second or third place in their local school's speech contest.

They shared presentations on this year's topic, "A Great American Leader."

At Northwestern Middle School, the first place winner Earl Stoll, a seventh grader, won a $50 cash award and trophy. Northwestern Middle School will also receive an engraved trophy.

Second place winner Kate Bergum and third place winner Olivia Amber, sixth graders, also received trophies.

Community judges were Dennis Dalbec, Cathy Kurtz and Margie Beattie.

In Superior, the first place winner Ellen Stromgren, a fifth grade student at Four Corners Elementary School, received a $50 cash award and trophy. The school also receives a trophy. Second place winner Brittany MacDonell, a sixth grade student from Cathedral School and third place winner Brandyn Christman, a fifth grade student from Bryant Elementary School, also received trophies.

Community judges were Judy Mossberger, Dustin Anderson and Sonja Nelson.

Nearly 100,000 students compete in the Modern woodmen contest each year.
