Consolation champs

After a tough opening-round loss to Shaw of Milwaukee the Superior Mariners Junior Gold hockey team rallied to win its next two games and capture the Wisconsin State Division I consolation championship recently in Monroe.

The Mariners rebounded from the loss to defeat the Dodgeville Ice Wolves 3-1. Goals from Cody Spencer, Matt Shold and Brandon Burd helped rally the Mariners from a 1-0 first-period deficit. Shold also dished out two assists and Evan Moe and Burd each had one.

In the consolation championship game Superior defeated Hudson 4-3.

The Mariners got two goals each from Burd and Bradley Glonek, with Glonek notching the game-winner with four minutes to go. Moe, Spencer and Burd picked up assists and Dusty Abreu notched 34 saves in the victory.

Other team member are JT Vendela, Kaleena Eck, Michael Hinaus, William Mullens, Brittney Locken, Christian Kroll, Tyler Gamst, Noah Peterson, Weston Morris, John Nowicki, Chris Wines and William Bednarke. The Mariners are coached by Terry Shold and Mike Susens.

Successful season

The Superior Spartans Squirt A hockey team ended its season with an overall record of 36-6-3, which included 13 shutouts by goaltenders Caden Welch and Brendan Crayne.

The Spartans also went 9-0 in the Minnesota District 11 League and were 19-4-2 in tournaments.

They won their own tournament, posted three shutouts in winning the Spring Lake Park tournament and finished first in the Silver Division at Cloquet. They also were second at Lester Park and third at Hermantown.

Superior also competed in the Fargo International Squirt Tournament in Fargo ND. The tournament included 128 teams at the A and B level from all over the United States and Canada and is considered the largest squirt tournament in the world.

The Spartans took first place in Bracket two. After playing two qualifying games they were placed in a bracket of eight teams where they started off with a 4-2 win over a team from Phoenix, AZ.

Superior then lost in a shootout to St. Michaels Albertville, last year's tournament champion. After skating to a 1-1 regulation tie and then playing a scoreless five-minute overtime period, the game was forced to be ended by a five-man shoot-out, which St. Michaels Albertville won 3-2.

After moving to another bracket of 15 teams, Superior defeated Apple Valley 2-1 in overtime, Hyland Hills, CO 8-1 and Rochester, Minn., 4-1 in the semifinals and then White Bear Lake 2-1 in the championship game.

The Spartans ended the tournament with a 5-0-1 record.

Team members include: Luke Drougas, Max Curtis, Keelan Golat, Ian Johnson, Tucker Stamper, Kaleb Ullan, Hunter Paine, Blake Hanson, Derrick Mattson, Brett Stamper, Allen Flyen, Taylor Burger, Peter Hansen, Ty Christianson, Caden Welch and Brendan Crayne. They are coached by Pat Golat, Fred Paine and Perky Hanson.
