Seventh-grade boys
The Superior seventh-grade boys traveling basketball team finished its Great Northwest Basketball League season with a 24-0 record, winning the Ashland tournament this past weekend.
Superior opened with a 40-23 win over Rhinelander. Leading scorers were Brandon Myer with 17 points, and Brett Lozon with 12.
Superior then defeated Esko 45-24. Myer led again with 15 points, Lozon added 14, and Garrett Hobson added six.
Superior then knocked off Ashland 58-18. Lozon scored 15 points, followed by Shaun Petrovich with nine and Devin Borstad and Hobson with eight each.

In the championship game Superior defeated Lakeland 48-24. Petrovich led the way with 12 points, followed by Matt Larsen and Hobson with 10 each.
Other team members include: Grant Anderson, Evan Hughes and Terrell Wong. The team is coached by Jeff Anderson and assisted by Mike Butera.
Superior won all six league tournaments it entered this year. Others including Superior, Cloquet, Northwestern, Spooner and Minong.
Superior (29-3 overall) will play in its final tournament this weekend in Pine City.
Eighth-grade boys
The Superior eighth-grade boys traveling team finished the Greater Northwest Basketball League season Feb. 26 at the Baldwin-Woodville tournament, which featured the top teams from the GNBL.
Superior's first game was a 53-33 win over the highly-ranked Eau Claire Suns.
Defense led the way again as Superior defeated the Chippewa Cardinals 63-37.

The third game of the day was a 61-32 win over Altoona. The Spartans had 25-12 first-quarter lead and were able to put away the game in the second quarter by outscoring Altoona 20-5, to take a 45-17 halftime lead.
The championship game came down to No. 1-rated Superior against No. 2-rated Menomonie.
Superior jumped out to an early first-quarter lead of 23-15, but the Bucks came roaring back with a 21-4 second quarter to take a 36-27 lead. Superior used a patient third-quarter offensive attack to cut the lead to six, and continued to chip away in the fourth quarter. With three seconds remaining, the Spartans cut the gap to one point and then made 1-of-2 free throws to send the game into overtime.
Superior jumped out early in OT and never looked back to take the game and tournament title in a 57-53 win.
Superior finishes the season with an undefeated GNBL record and a three-year record of 74-2, which propelled it from a No. 28 ranking to the No. 1 ranking in a field of 151 teams.
Superior now travels to Rochester, Minn., this weekend for a tournament featuring the best Minnesota teams and then concludes the season March 26-27 in a Marshfield tournament featuring the best Wisconsin teams.
Members of Superior's team are: Austin Arnovich, Johnny Curphy, Connor Gray, Jeb Kimmes, Nic Mehlum, Devon Rivord, Nathan Sanders, McKenzie Schwarz, Jake Semborski, and Sam Urban. The team is coached by Jim Schwarz and assisted by Kyle Mehlum.
Solon Springs tourney

The Northern Lights I team of the Superior Basketball Association 7th-8th- grade league captured first place in the Solon Springs tournament.
Northern Lights drew the No. 1 seeded team from Great Lakes, which entered the tournament with a 12-0 record. Great Lakes had two previous victories over Northern Lights 1. This time, however, the boys from Northern Lights came out on top by a score of 38-33. Leading the way for NL 1 was Dustin Knutson with 14 points, followed by Dylan Knutson with nine, Christian Haberling eight, David Massoglia three, Brandon Adams and Nick Hesselgrave two each.
Jake Libal paced Great Lakes with 16 points. Collin Krysiak added seven, Dayton Gudowsi had four and Brandon Severin, Tim Meteraud, and Bryce Karlon had two each.
NL then defeated Solon Springs No. 2 38-36. Dustin Knutson led the way with 19 points, followed by Dylan Knutson, nine; Massoglia and Haberling, three each; and Hesselgrave and Alain Pierce, two each.
Solon Springs got 16 points from Logan Long and 14 from Ryan Anderson had 14.
In the title game NL defeated Bryant. In overtime Dylan Knutson was 4-for-4 from the line while brother, Dustin, was 1-for-1 plus a two-pointer for NL, which limited Bryant to just two points in the extra frame.
Dustin Knutson led the way with 14 points, Dylan Knutson had 10; Massoglia, eight; Haberling, three; and Brandon Adams, two.
For Bryant, Ean Fredericks took game-scoring honors with 21 points. Blake Sharpe added seven point, Austin Slaviero had two and Cole Edwards and Cole Defoe each made a free throw.

Other team members for Bryant team coached by Russell Fredericks and Rob Schlicting are Andrew Erickson, Trevor Gomulak, Tate Schlicting, Jake Nindorf and Brandon Byrns.
Other members of the championship NL 1 team are Liam Johnson, Griffin Freeman, Ronnie Nguyen. They are coached by Casey and Jeff Mickelson
Next up for the SBA are the league playoffs in all four divisions. Games begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and conclude with games including the championships on Saturday, March 5. All games are at the Superior Middle school.
