This year's 10-and-under all-star baseball team from Superior went 6-0 to win the Carlton Days baseball tournament last weekend.

During pool play, Superior defeated Cloquet Thompson, 19-0; East Itasca, 8-4; and Carlton, 7-2.

In the single-eliminated portion of the tournament, Superior, the No. 1 seed, cruised to a 21-6 victory in a rematch with Cloquet Thompson.

During Sunday's championship round, Superior defeated Duluth Central, 16-15, in the semifinals and Cloquet Conklin, 9-8, in nine innings in the championship game.

Against Central, Superior got off to a slow start and going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the team trailed 15-9. But Superior rallied to score seven runs, thanks to a few walks and some timely hitting, to win by one.

The game against Cloquet Conklin went back-and-forth from inning to inning, with both teams showing stellar pitching and defense. The game remained tight until Superior's Ari Jago led off the ninth with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. She then moved to third on Grant Hanson's single and eventually scored on Aaron Wakefield's game-winning hit, putting an end to the three-hour game.

Tyler Bee, Sam Urban and Jesse Polson pitched for Superior in the title game and Tyler Nystrom caught all nine innings.

Remaining team members are: Nick Hesselgrave, Austin Arnovich, Anthony Bronson and Peyton Flanders. The team is coached by Don Bee, Jim Nystrom and Jeff Arnovich.

Sr. Cal Ripken League

Athletics 11, Cubs 0

Andy Glonek pitched a complete game three-hitter while striking out four in the Athletics' 11-0 victory over the Cubs in four innings. Glonek also went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Jeremy Rowe made a good catch on defense.

Brandon Gustafson was also 2-for-3 for the A's, with a home run and two RBIs. Terrill Gordon also had a big game, with two hits and two RBIs. Dylan Semborski had one hit and one RBI, Kyle Johnson had one hit and two RBIs and Mike Hinaus added one hit.

For the Cubs, Willie Stream had a triple, and Daniel Mikel and Chris Carrey both had one hit apiece. Aaron Wakefield and Daniel Kulas both pitched for the Cubs.

Cardinals 7, Athletics 6

The Cardinals improved to 5-9 with a win over the Athletics, now with a 10-5 record.

Aaron Foley picked up the pitching win for the Cardinals and also went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and RBIs, one of which scored the winning run. Austin Arnovich was 2-for-3 with a double, and Colton Yepma had a triple.

The Athletics came close to tying the game up, but the runner was thrown out at home to end the game.

Glonek pitched two innings for the A's and Gustafson pitched the final four innings. Glonek, Semborski and Gordon all had two hits, and Glonek also scored two runs. Kyle Johnson had one hit and scored two runs for the A's.

Brewers 15, Cubs 7

Bee picked up the win on the mound for the Brewers and pitched four solid shutout innings. On offense, he was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Nystrom and Connor Anderson-Petroske also went 3-for-3, with Nystrom getting two RBIs. Mason Morris and Timmy Crimmis both added one hit apiece for the Brewers.

No game statistics were available for the Cubs.

Both teams now have records of 5-10 this season.

Orioles 9, Brewers 8

Ryan Connor earned the win on the mound and Nick Hesselgrave picked up the save as the Orioles edged the Brewers 9-8.

Mason Stien led the Orioles' offense with a triple, two singles, two runs scored and four RBIs. Gaige Rios added a double, two singles, three runs scored and one RBI, while Erick Anderson had a triple, single, one run scored and two RBIs. Ari Jago singled, was walked and hit by a pitch to score two runs. Ryan Connor had an RBI single, and Jake Semborski was walked twice and scored one run.

Although Connor earned the win and Hesselgrave got the save, Rios, Kyle Turkowski, Jago and Stien all pitched for the Orioles. Each player pitched one inning in the Orioles' pitching-by-committee scheme. The six combined to allow eight runs on seven hits while walking 10 and striking out seven.

Turkowski and Stien also made some important defensive plays for the Orioles.

Sam Urban, Tyler Nystrom and Tyler Bee shared pitching duties for the Brewers.
