Wood pellet plant coming to Hayward

HAYWARD -- Sawyer County Development Corporation (SCDC) has brokered a deal with Great Lakes Renewable Energy, Inc. (GLRE) to locate a $6 million wood pellet manufacturing plant in Sawyer County.

HAYWARD -- Sawyer County Development Corporation (SCDC) has brokered a deal with Great Lakes Renewable Energy, Inc. (GLRE) to locate a $6 million wood pellet manufacturing plant in Sawyer County.

GLRE had been searching for a location along the Highway 53 and Highway 63 corridors. Last week, the company purchased land approximately four miles south of Hayward. The plant, which will output 36,000 tons of wood pellets annually for residential and commercial heating applications, will employ 21 people when operating at capacity.

This timber-based industry will require as many as 12 full-time, year-round loggers to supply raw materials for its production. The "green" plant is also environmentally-safe as the only emissions will be in the form of water vapor released through the drying process at the facility.

Because the plant will use both hardwood and softwood materials, "Hayward is strategically located about as well as you can be within reach of both of those wood fiber sources," said Herb Seeger, operations and plant manager. "If everything goes according to current plans, GLRE will break ground sometime in 2008."
