ALBORN, Minn. - A pedestrian died after being struck by a southbound Canadian National freight train in rural south St. Louis County on Monday, Feb. 26.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported the victim was a 44-year-old Saginaw woman, providing no further details regarding her identity. Authorities had yet to determine Monday afternoon why she was on the railroad track in a wooded area near the intersection of Highway 8 and Highway 7 in Culver Township. The crash occurred at 11:15 a.m. Monday.
The CN train remained stopped on the tracks on Monday afternoon, with CN staffers pulling on boots on Mesabi Trunk Road, running parallel to the railroad track, to walk in the snow to the train.
North of the train, first responders from the Sheriff’s Office, Alborn and Industrial fire departments and Cloquet Ambulance were gathered on Highway 8 where it intersected with the railroad track. The highway was closed for several hours on Monday. Curious drivers stopped to ask an Alborn firefighter blocking the highway about the situation, and the firefighter responded that they weren’t giving out any information at that point.
The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to confirm the woman’s identity. The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
