The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a wind chill warning for the entire Northland through Tuesday morning.
The warning is issued when the wind chill factor is expected to fall below -40 degrees. Wind chills are expected to be as cold as -35 degrees to -50 degrees across the Northland with the lowest occurring Sunday night.
Dangerous wind chills may cause frostbite in as little as five to 10 minutes, according to the Weather Service.
The Northland can expect temperatures to start to rise slightly across the region starting Tuesday afternoon. The Weather Service is predicting Wednesday's maximum temperature in Duluth to be 13 degrees without wind chill and a minimum of -12 degrees with the wind chill.
Other maximum and minimum temperatures expected across the region Wednesday:
- Brainerd: 9 degrees; -19 degrees with the wind chill.
International Falls: 10 degrees; -26 degrees with the wind chill.
Hinckley: 11 degrees; -15 degrees with the wind chill.
Ely: 12 degrees; -23 degrees with the wind chill.
Hibbing: 9 degrees; -24 degrees with the wind chill.
Ashland: 17 degrees; -15 degrees with the wind chill.
Hayward: 16 degrees; -17 degrees with the wind chill.
Due to the dangerous cold, Superior School District has canceled all school, in-person and virtual, for Monday. There will be no curbside food service or rural food routes. Activities and events scheduled for Monday are also canceled unless otherwise notified. Athletes and families will be contacted by their coaches regarding the status of practices and competitions. The University of Wisconsin-Superior delayed all on-campus classes Monday.
The Weather Service offers some safety tips during a wind chill warning: Avoid exposure during the coldest wind chills; stay dry and wear waterproof insulated boots; wear a hat and gloves as at least half of body heat is lost when not wearing a hat; and dress in layers.
Daily records broken
Four cities in the Northland broke or tied both their daily minimum temperature and coldest high Saturday. Duluth, Hibbing, International Falls and Brainerd broke both records while Ashland only broke its coldest high record by 3 degrees which was set in 2020
The minimum temperature and coldest high records on Saturday were:
- Duluth: -35 degrees breaking the old record of -29 degrees set in 1905; -6 degrees beating the old record of -1 set in 1970.
Hibbing: -39 degrees breaking the old record of -32 degrees set in 1965; -9 degrees beating the old record of 3 set in 1949.
International Falls: -42 degrees breaking the old record of -39 degrees set in 1909; -10 degrees beating the old record of -9 set in 1909.
Brainerd: -34 degrees tying the record set in 1916; -6 degrees breaking the old record of -4 set in 1922.
