Wayne H. Smith of Maple Grove, Minn. died Thursday, May 17, 2007, at age 77.

Wayne was born and raised in Chippewa Falls, Wis. where he graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1947. He earned his bachelor's degree from Superior State College, his masters from the University of Minnesota Duluth, and his doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado.

He served as captain in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Wayne taught elementary school in Beloit, Wis. and went on to teach at Superior State and the University of Northern Colorado. He was principal at Hilltop Elementary School in Mound, Minn., for 28 years.

Wayne liked to cry but he loved to laugh. His God-given joyful spirit affected all who crossed his path. Wayne loved fishing the Brule, traveling with his family, watching his grandkids participate in sports and music, golfing and reading.

He is preceded in death by his parents Orville and Sue; brother Alan on Nov. 15, 2006; and two infant sisters.

He is loved and will be deeply missed by his wife Marge (Olsen); children Craig (Sherry), Julie (Mitch) Peterson, Lisa (Craig) Kuffel, Brian (Mandy); grandchildren Kelsey, Taylor, Mick, Lauren, Dani, Haley, Alex, Riley, Kiera; nieces; nephews; and other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Wayzata Evangelical Free Church, 4040 Highway 101, Plymouth. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the David Lee Funeral Home in Wayzata and also half hour prior to service at church. Private family interment in Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville.

Memorials preferred to Alzheimers Association of Minnesota, 4550 77th St., Edina MN 55435, for research.
