Two men suspected of writing more than $10,000 in forged checks across Wisconsin and Minnesota are being sought by the Washburn County Sheriff's Department.

Two men suspected of writing more than $10,000 in forged checks across Wisconsin and Minnesota are being sought by the Washburn County Sheriff's Department.

The forgery trail started June 2 with the theft of approximately 280 checks from a Washburn County residence, according to Sheriff Terry Dryden. The forged checks began showing up immediately and have been written in Washburn, Sawyer, St. Croix, Hudson, Bayfield, Chippewa Falls and New Richmond counties in Wisconsin, Ramsey County in Minnesota and several small towns in both states.

The two male suspects are described as being clean cut, white, approximately 40 years of age and 180 to 200 pounds. They are driving a medium blue GMC Suburban with black running boards and a trailer hitch. It is possible that a 35-year-old female with dark hair may be accompanying them.

The checks have been passed mainly through gas stations, liquor stores, restaurants and clothing stores.

Dryden is asking for the public's help to identify the suspects. Anyone with information should call the Washburn County Sheriff's Office at (715) 468-4700. Ask for Investigator Audie Parenteau.
