92, formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Sept. 23. 2007, in Mineola, Texas, with his family's love surrounding him.
Walt was born July 29, 1915, the son of John and Ellma Becklund. He married Cleona Edith Peterson (Ashland) in Superior on Nov. 30, 1939.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two sisters, Helga M. (Becklund) Barstow and Jeanette E. (Becklund) Johnson.
He is survived by his daughter, Janice Spurlin, grandchildren, Jeff and Cynthia, great-grandchildren, Alexis, Christopher, Heather and Amelia, all residing in Texas and by nephew, Tom Barstow and niece, Bonnie (Barstow) Gruber.
Walt was a member of Superior Masonic Lodge 236. In 1951, he was elected to the Douglas County Board.
He enjoyed acting and participated in local productions while living in Superior, Lake Nebagamon and Bakersfield, Calif. While residing in Bakersfield, his parents spent several years with their son and family. In 1959, Walt was elected to the Bakersfield City Council.
While working as a master plumber, Walt accepted a position with an international contractor in 1978 and assisted in the construction of a city in Saudi Arabia.
Walt and Cleona spent many blessed years of retirement in Mineola, Texas. He loved woodworking/woodcarving and would make many things for family members including Cleona's wood quilting rack, wooden horses with a music box and wood carved swans, and Cleona loved quilting. They both enjoyed antique collecting, especially furniture.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 4900 Kinsey Drive, Tyler, Texas.
