Volunteering not only makes a difference in your life, but also in the lives of others. Many local organizations are in need of volunteers for a variety of positions:

Foster Grandparent Program

The Foster Grandparent Program is looking for men or woman, age 60 or older to share their time with children at Lake Superior Elementary School and Head Start Centers in Superior. While sharing their time, talents and life experiences, Foster Grandparents mentor, tutor, listen, share, and help children learn life skills. Foster Grandparents volunteer between 15 and 40 hours/week and receive a non-reportable stipend, transportation reimbursement, recognition, support, on-going training and social activities. LS&M Railroad

The Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad welcomes new volunteers for its 2006 summer season. The LSMR operates a historic train in West Duluth from the zoo along the St. Louis River to New Duluth. Volunteers maintain our equipment and track and help visitors to the railroad. Railroad experience is not necessary. Harbor House Shelter

Harbor House Crisis Shelter's mission is to provide a safe, hospitable shelter for homeless, single women and/or families with legal custody of minor children. Our goal is to assist our guests in attaining housing. HHCS is seeking volunteers to help staff the shelter in the evening, overnight and weekends. We also need daytime help with answering the phones, mailings, seasonal outdoor work, childcare and homework help, occasional carpentry projects and general cleaning. Royalton Manor

Royalton Manor, 1900 New York Ave., needs volunteers to help with bingo at 2 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday. Call Laura at (715) 392-1014.

St. Francis in the Park

St. Francis in the Park Health & Rehabilitation Center has volunteer opportunities for in-house store clerks, outdoor companions for seniors, shopping for residents, weekly activities and help with bingo games or bus outings. Entertain with your special talent, be a Welcome Wagon volunteer or help with the phones. Call Chris Fitch at 394-5591.

Superior Vocations Center

Superior Vocations Center, in conjunction with the Superior/Douglas County Literacy Council, is looking for tutors to work with people with low reading, spelling and math skills. Training is provided. Call Tom Karas at (715) 392-6171.

RSVP

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is looking for individuals age 55 and over who enjoy being with children and are willing spend time reading stories, baking cookies, playing, gardening, sharing hobbies and crafts, etc. with them. Volunteers determine how often they will volunteer. They receive insurance coverage while volunteering, transportation reimbursement, training, recognition and other social events. NWCSA

Northwest Community Services Agency needs volunteers to help in the free store, food shelf, soup kitchen or homeless programs. Call (715) 392-5127.

Animal Rescue Federation

The Animal Rescue Federation, Inc. of Superior needs volunteers to help at the care and adoption center on Hill Avenue, programs presented to schools and groups, and at the new administrative office on Tower Avenue. Training is provided. Call Rachael Martin at (715) 394-7327.

DAV Transportation

The Disabled American Veterans Transportation Program is needs volunteers to drive veterans from the Superior to the Minneapolis VA Medical Center for appointments. Local drivers are also needed. For more information, call (715) 398-2957 or stop by Superior's VA Clinic and ask for Richard Nolan.

Historical Society

The Douglas County Historical Society needs volunteers to help with programs, archival research, cataloguing collection artifacts and photos and creating exhibits. Call at 392-8449 or stop by 1101 John Ave. between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. E-mail at dchs@douglashistory.org .

Volunteer drivers

The Aging Resource Center for Douglas County, 1805 N. 16th St., needs volunteers to help provide transportation to Douglas County residents Monday-Friday. Drivers use their own vehicles and must have a valid driver's license, insurance and good driving record. They will be reimbursed 40.5 cents per mile. Applications may be filled out at the Aging Resource Center for Douglas County office.

Superior-Douglas County Senior Center

Senior volunteers are needed 12:30-4 p.m. Wednesday or Friday with bingo, one or two days per month. Contact Carol at the senior center, 1527 Tower Ave., or call 394-3644.

St. Mary's Hospital

Volunteer opportunities include working with patients, serving as receptionists or staffing the Koffee Knook. Morning and afternoon positions are available for men or women of any age. Call the volunteer office at 395-5400, ext. 7109 or visit the volunteer office in the lower level of the hospital mornings Monday-Friday.

WWII Heritage Center

The Richard I Bong World War II Heritage Center wants you. Volunteers from Wisconsin and Minnesota are needed to share their knowledge with heritage center visitors, help the curator, staff the gift shop, work in the research library, and help with education programs and administration. Military retirees, veterans, military and history buffs are a good fit to help share the stories of the men and women who helped win the peace during WWII. Call (715) 392-7151.
