Vipers win Gadzik title

The Bayside Vipers went 3-0 over the weekend to finish first in the Casey Gadzik Memorial Tournament in Solon Springs. The tournament was sponsored by the St. Croix Ravens baseball team.

The Bayside Vipers went 3-0 over the weekend to finish first in the Casey Gadzik Memorial Tournament in Solon Springs. The tournament was sponsored by the St. Croix Ravens baseball team.

The Vipers kicked off the tournament on Friday night with a 14-1 win over the Port Wing Boilers.

Josh Howie got his first start on the mound for the Vipers. He shut the Boilers down for six innings allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six for the win.

Matt Haedrich finished up on the mound as he shut down the Boilers for a scoreless inning.

The Vipers advanced to the championship game with a 7-0 win over the Blooming Valley Blue Devils.

Bayside sent newcomer Matt Haedrich to the mound for his first start in roughly seven years. Haedrich looked as if he didn't miss a day as he tossed a complete game two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts.

Marcus Besonen led the Vipers at the plate as he two hits, two RBIs and two runs scores. Bob Eastman added a hit with three RBIs. Other Viper hits were by Haedrich, Nick Garramone, Chris Vendela and Kevin Olson. 

The Vipers captured their third Gadzik Memorial trophy Sunday night as the beat the Iron City Merchants 4-2. 

Chris Vendela started on the mound for the Vipers and earned his seventh win of the season as he went seven innings giving up two runs on five hits while striking out six for the complete-game victory. 

Eastman led the Vipers at the plate as he crushed a home run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

Pat Davy had two hits, one being a double, and two RBIs. Haedrich added two hits and Olson and Garramone each added singles. 

The Vipers end the season with a overall record of 15-11.
