DULUTH, Minn. -- Authorities have identified the 22-year-old man who died after being found unresponsive in a Duluth hotel pool early Sunday.

Nathan Timothy Fihn of Newport was pronounced dead at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center after being found in the pool at the Radisson Hotel Duluth-Harborview about 1:15 a.m. Sunday, the St. Louis County Sheriff 's Office reported.

The hotel issued a statement Sunday saying that Fihn drowned "after gaining unauthorized access to the pool after it was closed for the evening.

"He was discovered by his companions, who alerted hotel staff. The staff took action and first responders arrived minutes later," the hotel's statement read. "We are now assisting the Sheriff's (Office) with its investigation into this tragedy. Our deepest condolences go out to the young man's family and friends."

The sheriff's office said alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in the incident. The cause of death remains under investigation.
