The Adam Van Alstine Foundation is hosting a reception to raise awareness of their program to help fund youth who can benefit from mentorship and instruction through the sport of boxing.
The event will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Horton's Gym, 23 West 1st Street in Duluth.
The foundation's principle mission is to honor the late Marine and youth boxer, Van Alstine, by helping young people learn to overcome adversity, acquire discipline and commitment and to achieve personal goals.
Van Alstine, who died on Feb. 25, 2006 as a result of a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq, overcame many obstacles in his young life through the principles of self-dedication, perseverance, and commitment to one's goals.
"The Adam Van Alstine Foundation was formed to remember Adam's ultimate sacrifice to our country and to help young people acquire skills and attributes to foster good citizenship inside and outside the ring," said Chuck Horton, owner of Horton's Gym and Van Alstine's coach.
