UWS women lose close game

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball team nearly earned its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season Wednesday night but fell to UW-Stout 76-73 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball team nearly earned its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season Wednesday night but fell to UW-Stout 76-73 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The UWS women are now 4-12 overall and 0-8 in the WIAC. UW-Stout is 9-8, 4-4.

Stout built an eight point lead three minutes into the game, but the Yellowjackets came back to tie it with about four and a half minutes left in the first period. Stout then regained a lead of six before UWS made it 39-37 going into the second half.

To begin the second, Stout again moved out quickly to build a 13-point lead. A 14-4 run put the Yellowjackets right back into the game, trailing 62-60 with six minutes left, but the Blue Devils held on to win.

Kaitlyn Houser led the Yellowjackets in scoring with 18 points. Bri Davis had 16 and Anna Petersen finished with 11. Kelsey Thingvold had eight rebounds to lead UWS and also added nine points.

For Stout Julia Hirssig was 8-for-11 from the free-throw line and led all scorers with 26 points. For the night, Stout was 21-for-28 on free throws compared to 13-for-19 for UWS.

The Yellowjackets, however, held a large advantage behind the arc, where they hit 8-of-15 shots to 3-for-15 for Stout.
