'Jacket women win twice
It was a big week for the UWS women's basketball team, which came up with wins against Northwestern and St. Scholastica.
Against Northwestern, the Yellowjackets started slowly and had just a 30-28 advantage at the half before pulling away in the second half. Katie Moench scored 18 points and Jenny Carlson added 13 points, while Ashley Laidley contributed 10 rebounds for UWS.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Yellowjackets and set the tone for a 78-61 win over St. Scholastica on Saturday. UWS scored 47 of its points in the second half.
Moench led the team with 17 points and was one of four Yellowjackets in double figures. Kristina Higgins added15 points, while Laidley and Carissa Nord scored 12 and 11 points respectively. Higgins also added nine rebounds, while Beth Haworth had four steals for UWS. With the win, the 'Jackets improve to 4-5 overall heading into the Christmas break.

'Jackets upset
After cruising to a 10-2 record to start the season, the Yellowjacket men's hockey team hit a bump in the road on Saturday night, losing to Finlandia 5-3.
Myles Palliser scored twice, and Nate Rein added the other goal for UWS, which led 3-2 heading into the third period. Baron Bradley made 22 saves for the Yellowjackets.
As the 'Jackets head into the break, they are fourth (4-2) in the NCHA behind Stout (5-0-1), River Falls (5-1) and St. Norbert's (4-1-1). In addition to Finlandia, their losses this season have come at the hands of St. Norbert's and Stout.
Scoring leaders at the break are Braden Desmet (20 points), Corey Stark (15 points), Nate Rein (14 points) and Chris Berry (13 points).
Coming up
All UWS athletes will get time off for the Christmas break, but some will get more than others. The women's hockey team (12-2) will get nearly a month off before returning home to host Concordia College Jan. 6-7. The men's basketball team (2-7) has a couple of weeks off before heading to Bemidji State University for a non-conference game on Dec. 29.
The UWS women's basketball team (4-5) will host UM-Morris Dec. 30 and the men's hockey team will host a four-team event Dec. 29-30. As part of that event, on Dec. 29 at Wessman Arena, Stevens Point will play Curry College at 4 p.m. and Northland College will play UWS at 8 p.m. The next night, Curry will play Superior at 7:05 p.m.

On a final note, the UWS men's and women's indoor track teams will open their seasons on Jan. 6 at the Lakehead Invitational in Thunder Bay.
