Paul Bagley, of Duluth, a music performance major at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, has won the national competition for National Federation of Music Clubs in the strings division.

Earlier this spring, Bagley, a senior, won the competitions for Minnesota and the Midwest to advance to the national competition for the federation's Student Collegiate Biennial Award.

For the competition, Bagley submitted a 40-minute tape of his violin performances of works by Beethoven, Bach and Tchaikovsky. His tape, and those of other university students, from around the country were evaluated in a blind competition.

In winning the national competition, Bagley receives a $2,500 reward he plans to use for graduate school and to buy a violin.
