UWS recognizes Marcovich with honorary degree

The University of Wisconsin-Superior recognized Superior attorney Toby Marcovich with an honorary degree at its 111th Spring Commencement Saturday at Wessman Arena.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior recognized Superior attorney Toby Marcovich with an honorary degree at its 111th Spring Commencement Saturday at Wessman Arena.

Marcovich served eight years as a member of the Board of Regents and was twice elected regent president. He was appointed in 1997 by former Gov. Tommy Thompson.

According to university officials, Marcovich was instrumental in gaining approval for construction of the campus' Health & Wellness Center. He and his wife Sharon, a UWS alumna, also made a financial gift for the project, one of many. The couple also serve as honorary chairpeople for UWS' Campaign Superior: Higher Expectations.

Marcovich is also a past member of the board of directors for the UW-Superior Foundation Inc. Among his professional and civic accomplishments through the years, Marcovich is a past president of the Douglas County Bar Association and a former magistrate of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. He has served as Superior city attorney, assistant district attorney for Douglas County, and president of the Superior School Board.

Chancellor Julius Erlenbach presented Marcovich with an honorary doctor of humane letters to recognize his "accomplishments as an attorney, dedication to his community, and service to higher education."

Marcovich is a Superior native who earned both his bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a partner in the law firm of Marcovich, Cochrane, Milliken, Swanson & Kropid LLP. After receiving his degree, Marcovich presented the keynote address, in which he praised the graduates for completing their degrees.
