The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's soccer team began its preseason on Aug. 16 under the guidance of new head coach Joe Mooney.
"We're excited to officially begin the 2008 season," Mooney said. "I know the guys have been working hard in the off-season and are eager to improve on last year's 6-8-1 record."
The team will have a large number of returning players including senior captains Gubio Henrique, a forward from Florianopolis, Brazil, and Tony Sorenson a goalkeeper from Duluth. Last year's team MVP, Nate Mikle (defender, Marinette), is also returning.
Along with that veteran leadership and other returning players, Mooney and the Yellowjackets are expecting some major contributions from new players coming to UWS from across Minnesota and Wisconsin.
"I fully expect some of the new guys will get some serious minutes this year, some will compete for starting spots," Mooney said. "Overall, I think the new players will mesh well with the group of kids who have stayed with our program. From top to bottom, this squad will be made up of high quality student athletes."

New to the UWS program this year are local additions, Eric Nilsen, Pat Bittingerand Andy Larrivy, all from Duluth. They're joined by Aaron Bresser (Maple Grove, Minn.), Thomas Shuldheisz (Andover, Minn.), Logan George (Anoka, Minn.), Dan Warnke (Burnsville, Minn.), Jared Besser (Shakopee, Minn.), Tim Fitterer (Mankato, Minn.) and Craig Pufall (Appleton).
UWS opens the season this weekend, playing at Crown College at 4 p.m. Friday and North Central at 2 p.m. Saturday.
