UWS hoops sweep at Finlandia

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's and women's basketball teams each defeated the Finlandia Lions at the Paavo Nurmi Center in Hancock, Mich.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's and women's basketball teams each defeated the Finlandia Lions at the Paavo Nurmi Center in Hancock, Mich.

The UWS men won 81-74 while the Yellowjacket women won 62-58.

In the men's game, UWS got 19 points and five assists from Dan Culy, 17 points, five assists and two steals from Dwight Hill, 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds from Jake Smith and 11 points from Shane Manor.

Ray Byrnes also chipped in with nine points, Ben Lindberg had six and David Headley made a 3-pointer.

UWS led 43-39 at the half, then outscored Finlandia 38-35 in the second half.

Ryan Artley led the Lions with 34 points. Tyler Gordon and Tucker Thoreson added 13 apiece.

The 'Jackets (10-14) wrap up the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday at UW-Oshkosh. They will then play a WIAC quarterfinal tournament game on Monday.

The UWS women got 13 points and 11 rebounds from Anna Petersen, 16 points and three steals from Ashley Laidley and 10 points apiece from Kelsey Thingvold and Chelsey McNabb.

Ally Tincknell led the Lions with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Jodi Ruitta added 19 points and Linzy Monticello had seven assists.

UWS led 33-30 at the half and outscored Finlandia 29-28 in the second half.

The Lady 'Jackets (5-19) wrap up their season at 1 p.m. Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.
