The state is handing out a total of $250,000 in grant money to 42 nonprofit organizations that serve veterans and their families, including the University of Wisconsin-Superior Foundation. Governor Scott Walker announced the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) grants this week. They will provide financial assistance and other services to Wisconsin veterans and their families.
"Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country and they deserve the best when they conclude active duty service," Walker said in a news release. "These grants will fund things like emergency financial assistance, transitional housing, and service dogs for veterans with disabilities. I thank all of the grant recipients for their commitment to serving Wisconsin's veterans."
The UW-Superior Foundation will receive $25,000 from the grant.
"UW-Superior is proud to be ranked among the nation's Top 25 Military Friendly Public Schools," said Daniel Fanning, director of communications and government relations at UWS, UWS alumnus and combat veteran. "It is an honor to help serve and support those who have sacrificed so much for our nation. We are truly grateful for the State of Wisconsin's ongoing support. These funds will go toward our Veteran and Nontraditional Service Center (VNSC)."
The UWS veteran service center provides a wide range of support programming for veterans of all ages. Military service members, veterans and their families make up roughly 5 percent of the entire student body.

"The team in the VNSC do an outstanding job working directly with our veterans and other non-traditional students and their families to ensure they're set up for success at UW-Superior, including tutoring, career preparation and degree completion," Fanning said. "We appreciate Governor Walker and the State of Wisconsin awarding these funds to UW-Superior and the 41 other veteran-serving organizations who received funding."
UWS was recently named a Military Friendly School for the seventh year by GI Jobs. This top-25 ranking, of which UWS is the only university in the region to receive this national ranking, is in recognition of the university's efforts to assist military personnel, veterans and their family members in completing a college education.
