Superior native and art expert Emile Mathis brings an exhibition of etchings and engravings by famed American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler to the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a six-week public showing.

"James Abbott McNeill Whistler: Original Etchings and Lithographs" opens to the public Sept. 5 and runs through Oct. 13 in Kruk Gallery in the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center.

The exhibit is free. Kruk Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, but hours may vary. For the latest information, call the UW-Superior visual arts department at 394-8391.

Although known to many as the portrait artist who painted "Whistler's Mother," Whistler also created numerous etchings and engravings from the late 1850s until well into the 1890s. He worked closely with Seymour Haden, his English brother-in-law who was a well-known pioneering printmaker.

Mathis' exhibit includes 35 Whistler prints. Among them are works from the artist's "Thames Suite," in which Whistler drew then created prints of waterfront scenes along the Thames River in London.

Also in the show is a print of the Italian city of Venice, part of a set that Whistler was commissioned to create as his reputation grew.

Mathis said the exhibit will cover Whistler's career as a printmaker. This is the ninth year Mathis has assembled a notable art exhibition for display at UW-Superior.

Mathis graduated from UW-Superior in 1968 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. In 1972 he opened Mathis Gallery and Frame Shop in Racine, using his personal collection as inventory at the beginning. Over the years he has become an internationally recognized dealer in prints.

Kruk Gallery is located inside the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center, Catlin Avenue and 19th Street.
