Some UW-Whitewater faculty set out on a 42-mile walk Thursday from Whitewater to Madison to hand deliver a letter to state legislators.

The open letter expresses opposition to the budget repair law and the governor's proposed biennium budget. UW-Whitewater faculty endorsed it at a recent meeting.

Education professor James Hartwick says that historically, important letters have been delivered by hand.

"We are walking our letter as a form of protest," says Hartwick. "Perhaps in a less dramatic sense than Ghandi's march to the sea, or King's various marches, but it's the idea that it is a form of protest."

In the letter, UW-Whitewater faculty voice opposition to the repeal of collective bargaining for most public employees, the deep cuts to both higher and K-12 education that are being proposed in Governor Walker's budget, as well as cuts to programs for the poor and the environment.

The professors plan to arrive at the Capitol Saturday morning where they'll hand the letter off to some Democratic legislators.
