The Superior High School football team improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Rivers Conference with a 26-19 win over the Eau Claire North Huskies Friday night at Ole Haugsrud Field.

The Spartans opened the season with two come-from-behind wins and it looked like that streak was going to end when they missed a 20-yard field goal attempt with 8:14 remaining.

Superior's defense forced a punt after three plays which eventually led to Spencer Urban's 4-yard touchdown pass to Paul Edwards with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter. Aaron Wakefield's two points on the conversion play gave Superior a 26-19 lead.

"It was pretty much a designed run for me and I tried to get to the corner (of the end zone)," Urban said. "When the backer came to me I was looking for a receiver to throw to. Edwards turned around and I hit him right at the last second when I got hit."

Superior's defense came through again and stopped North at midfield with 1:47 on the clock. After getting a first down, Superior ran out the clock.

"We're sure making it fun for the fans, but it's obviously fun for us, to," SHS coach Bob DeMeyer said.

Wakefield had a game he'll remember, but for different reasons. Not only did he rush for 146 yards, three touchdowns and a two-point conversion, he unfortunately fumbled the ball away three times.

"We have confidence in every kid that handles the ball, kicking it or whatever things they do, we're going to give them a chance," DeMeyer said. "Aaron lost the ball a couple of times, but then he ended up making some huge plays for us. He's an unbelievably mentally strong sophomore, and his two-point conversion run at the end of the game was huge."

Wakefield's 1-yard touchdown run gave Superior a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter. He also caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Urban and then scored on a 71-yard run early in the third quarter.

Urban was 12-of-21 passing for 133 yards and carried the ball 15 times for 80 yards. Edwards also had a 39-yard carry and caught three passes for 36 yards. Kyle Turkowski was Urban's main target, catching six passes from 38 yards.

On defense for the Spartans, Ben Erickson led the way with 10 tackles; Morgan Sannes added eight tackles, including a sack and tackle for loss; Colton Lorenz had seven tackles, including a TFL; Anthony Valentine had a sack and TFL; and Jack Bergum and Trent Olson came up with interceptions.

ECN quarterback Adam Faanes was 23-of-34 passing for 216 yards. Ryan Connor caught five passes and Anthony Miloszewicz and JT Nelson had four catches apiece.

"I thought we played our hearts out and gave it everything we had," ECN coach Ben King said. "We made some plays and stopped them in the red zone, but you have to hand it to them, they came back and made some plays at the end of the game. They're well coached and did a good job."

Each team turned the ball over three times in the first half, including the first two times they had the ball in the first quarter. ECN's first turnover was a fumble on the first play of the game.

Superior got on the scoreboard first when Wakefield scored from 1-yard out on the second play of the second quarter. The extra-point kick failed, giving Superior a 6-0 lead.

North took a 7-6 lead on its next possession when Nelson ran up the middle for a 7-yard touchdown. Dom Berlin's kick gave the Huskies a 7-6 lead.

Superior regained the lead on its next possession when Urban threw a screen pass to Wakefield, who squirted through the defense untouched up the middle for a 21-yard touchdown. Superior failed on the two-point conversion for a 12-7 lead with 3:03 left in the first half.

Superior took a 18-7 lead on the second play of the third quarter on a draw play that saw Wakefield go up the middle, break to the left sideline and score a 71-yard touchdown. The Spartans were once again stopped on the two-point run.

The Huskies got that touchdown right back as Andrew Fischer returned the ensuing kickoff 71 yards for a touchdown. North failed on the two-point conversion, but still led 19-18 with 37 seconds left in the third quarter.

Superior followed that up with 14-play, 78-yard drive that made it to North's 4-yard line. The Spartans kept the drive alive by converting on fourth down three times. Urban rushed for first downs on two fourth-down plays, and benefited from an ECN pass interference penalty on a fourth-and-5 play.

Unfortunately when faced with a fourth fourth-down, this time from the 3, freshman kicker McKenzie Schwarz was wide left on a 20-yard field-goal attempt.

Superior's defense forced ECN to punt after just three plays and the Spartans got the ball back at the 48-yard line with 6:32 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"We had a lot of confidence, we always do," Urban said. "We're not going to quit, ever. We just keep working hard."

After a 35-yard pass to Lorenz and an Urban run up the middle for 13 yards, Superior lost a yard, threw an incomplete pass and rushed for two yards, which set up a fourth-and-goal from the 4.

That's when Urban rolled to the right and found Edwards in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. Wakefield then busted through the ECN defense for the two-point conversion to give Superior a seven-point lead, 26-19.

"We wanted them to think run and drop it right over their heads, and that's what we were able to do," DeMeyer said. "Our offensive line did a great job, especially on that play, and our defense was outstanding all game. It was once again an entire team effort."

North had one last chance and moved the ball to midfield. But Superior's defense forced two incomplete passes to give the Spartans the ball back with 1:47 remaining.

"We were in great position in the last eight or nine minutes, and if we make a play and get a first down, it's a different ball game," King said. "We're going to look at the positives, keep looking forward and keep working hard."

The Spartans host Hudson (1-2, 0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Huskies host Rice Lake (2-1, 1-0).
