One day after being outscored 30-0 in a doubleheader sweep at Rice Lake, the Superior High School softball team put up a battle with a 4-3 loss at Duluth Denfeld on Tuesday.

"Although we didn't walk away with a win, this game gave the kids back their confidence," SHS coach Amy Zembo said. "We've struggled the past three games with some basic fundamentals, and it was good to see them play to their potential. We switched the entire infield around due to injuries, and the kids played as though they've practiced there all season."

The Spartans were led offensively by Juliana Polson, two hits and an RBI; Brogin Wines, a double; and Kaitlin Mergen, Cassy O'Neill and Taylor Johnson all singled.

Taylor Thompson suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs with seven walks and three strikeouts.

Kaitlin Bagley and Nikki Logergren pitched for Denfeld, allowing seven hits with 11 strikeouts.

Denfeld jumped out with a two-run lead in the first as Logergren walked and scored on an error on Kayla Dammann's sac bunt. Dammann eventually scored on a passed ball.

It went to 3-0 in the second thanks to a walk, stolen base and single.

In Superior's third inning, Taylor Johnson hit a two-out single, stole second and scored on Polson's hit. Wines then knocked in Polson with a double to the fence and Mergen knocked in the third run with an RBI single.

Logergren came on in relief for Denfeld and ended the inning with a strikeout.

Denfeld's final run came on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning.

Superior loaded the bases in the sixth inning as Thompson reached on an error, O'Neill singled and Alyssa Schlicting was hit by a pitch. But the inning ended on a fly out.

Thompson suffered the loss in both Rice Lake games for the Spartans, who managed just one hit in the two games, a single by Polson in the opener.

Allison Wainionpaa also pitched for Superior in the first game, getting the Spartans out of a jam in the bottom of fourth inning.
