The Superior High School softball team found itself in pitching duels Monday and Tuesday at Liebaert Field.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, they came up short in both games, losing to Grand Rapids 1-0 Monday and Duluth Denfeld 5-2 in 12 innings Tuesday.

The only run of Monday's game came in the top of the fifth inning as Grand Rapids' Bailey Rasmussen singled, moved to second on a single by Katie Arnold and eventually scored on a fielder's choice.

Kim Felix also singled for the Thunderhawks.

Alayna Moe, Taylor Thompson and Samantha DeMeyer singled for Superior.

Thompson suffered the loss, allowing three hits and five walks while striking out five.

Anya Olson was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Spartans' best chance to score came in the seventh inning when they put runners on second and third with two outs. But the game ended with a fly out to left field.

Tuesday's game with Denfeld was scoreless until the Hunters scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning thanks to a couple of hits and a walk.

Superior kept the game going with two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning on Cassie Berg's two-run double. Scoring were Brogin Wines and Thompson, who walked.

With Berg on second with no outs, Denfeld changed pitchers and Nikki Logergren got out of the jam with a strike out and a double play when the Hunters' center fielder caught a fly ball and caught Berg off second base.

In Denfeld's 12th inning, a walk, single, error and another single led to the three winning runs.

"Its hard to swallow a loss in this fashion, but the kids played their hearts out," SHS coach Amy Zembo said. "To come back and tie it in the 10th goes to show how determined they are. The girls have improved tremendously as the season moves forward, and tonight showed how solid they can play defense."
