Superior High School senior diver Mike Sherwood advanced to this weekend's WIAA State Swimming and Diving Meet with a fourth-place finish at Saturday's sectional meet in Hudson.
As a team, the Spartans in fifth place out of 10 teams.
Sherwood piled up 356.55 points in his fourth-place finish in the one-meter diving event. Elliot Campbell of Eau Claire Memorial/North won the event with 430.10 points. Sherwood's point total was a 20-point improvement from his previous best and he is seeded 14th out of 24 qualifiers statewide.
The highest placing swimming event for the Spartans was a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. George Eisenmann, Sherwood, Mason Ford and Jacob Noonan swam a season best time in earning a spot on the podium. Noonan was also fifth in the 200 free and seventh in the 500 free with times just off his best times despite recent illness.
The 200 medley relay of Tim Mahan, Andre Anderson, Scott Kvam and Eisenmann placed fifth as did the 200 freestyle relay of Eisenmann, Ford, Kvam and Noonan. Both relays swam season best times.

As a team SHS had 64 percent best times with all but one entry scoring team points.
SHS coach George Lehman singled out Ford, Mahan, Dylan Holck and Sherwood as making notable improvements.
The state diving event is Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium.
