The Rice Lake Warriors defeated the Superior High School football team 45-6 Friday night in Rice Lake.

Rice Lake quarterback Cody Novinska entered Friday night's game averaging more than 10 yards a carry. The Spartans found out that he can also throw and kick the ball as the senior tossed two touchdown passes and kicked a 37-yard field to help the Warriors improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Rivers Conference.

The loss drops the Spartans to 3-2 and 1-2.

"Obviously this was a very disappointing loss, especially after what we all felt was a great week of practice," SHS coach Bob DeMeyer said. "There were no surprises, nothing we hadn't prepared for. Rice Lake just executes so well in all facets of their program and we're not there yet."

Novinska only rushed for eight yards on five carries, but he completed 4-of-5 passes for 28 yards and two touchdowns and guided a Warrior offense that outgained Superior 288-126.

Coltan Weinberger led Rice Lake on the ground with 120 yards on 23 carries.

For Superior, Aaron Wakefield rushed for 77 yards on 16 carries; and quarterback Spencer Urban was 7-of-20 passing for 71 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown pass to Morgan Sannes, who finished with three catches, along with Colton Lorenz.

The Warriors struck early as they recovered a fumble on Superior's first play of the game.

Then on Rice Lake's first play Cody Novinska threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Putzke. Novinska also kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game.

"When you start the game with a turnover and an injury on the first play, then their first play is a touchdown, that certainly gives them a huge boost," DeMeyer said. "We're a team that is still learning how to respond to adversity, play with a sense of urgency on every play regardless of the situation."

It went to 14-0 on Rice Lake's next possession when Novinska hooked up with Jake Drager for a 12-yard touchdown. Novinska kicked the extra point with 7:53 left in the first quarter.

Superior followed with a 15-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Sannes hauling in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Urban. The Spartans failed on the two-point conversion for a 14-6 score.

Urban rolled left on the touchdown and found Sannes in the end zone where he caught the ball while keeping his toes just inside the sidelines.

Rice Lake took a 17-6 lead on Novinska's 36-yard field goal four minutes into the second quarter.

Colten Weinberger's 2-yard touchdown run, and Novinska's kick, gave Rice Lake a 24-6 lead with 2:07 left in the first half.

The Warriors took the second-half kick and after running 15 plays, and 6:39 off the clock, took a 31-6 lead when Putzke busted over from 2 yards out and Novinska kicked the extra point.

"At the half, we didn't talk much about x's and o's, it was a matter of just going out and playing with emotion, executing and getting back into the game," DeMeyer said. "We really had kids flying to the ball, pads were popping and we thought we had them stopped on their first possession. But they converted on a third a long, then a fourth and short and went in to score again."

Rice Lake scored again for a 38-6 lead the next time it got the ball as Jake Daniel scored from 11 yards out and Novinska kicked another extra point.

With the game in running time, and reserves playing for both teams, the Warriors increased their lead to 45-6 early in the fourth quarter when back-up quarterback Shawn Magee sprinted 55 yards for a touchdown and then kicked the extra point.

The Spartans will celebrate homecoming next week by hosting the Menomonie Indians at 7 p.m. Friday. The Indians improved to 5-0 and 3-0 with a 50-6 win Friday over Eau Claire North.

"The focus this week will be finding a way to put a full game together, getting maximum, all-out effort every single play with no hesitation," DeMeyer said. "We're looking for the energy, physicality and passion that it takes to compete in varsity football at this level. High school football is about high energy, emotion, letting it all hang out on the field and having fun. We need to create and maintain that type of atmosphere again and compete from start to finish. We will find the a way to do it. There may even be a handful of new numbers on the field, whatever it takes."
