The Superior High School football team scored a touchdown on the first and last play of Friday night's game with Hudson, unfortunately in between it was all Raiders as they defeated the Spartans 41-12 before an Ole Haugsrud Field crowd of around 1,500.

The loss was the first of the season for the Spartans, who fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Rivers Conference. Hudson improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the BRC.

"That's a fantastic team, but we made them look a lot better than they were, plain and simple" SHS coach Bob DeMeyer said. "Once things got out of control we couldn't reel them back in. Like I said at the beginning of the year, when things don't go our way, we're going to fix it. We're going to take care of a few things and get after it.

"We're not making any excuses and we're not pointing any fingers. Every player here made mistakes. It was just one of those nights where anything that could have gone wrong, did."

Aaron Wakefield ran back the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead for Superior.

Hudson followed up by scoring six touchdowns on its next seven possessions for a commanding 41-12 lead at the half.

"We knew as an offense we had to come out after that and put the ball into the end zone," Hudson quarterback Luke Miller said. "We knew what we had to do and we did it. Getting the extra point was huge, it gave us the lead, then after that things started clicking and we did exactly what we wanted."

The only time Superior stopped the Raiders in the first 24 minutes came when George Eisenmann recovered a Raider fumble with 6:26 left in the second quarter.

"They didn't show us anything on the field tonight that we didn't work on in practice," DeMeyer said. "We just didn't get it done and we're going to get better because of this.

"They're a very well coached team and do what they do well. If we could have stopped them after we ran back the opening kickoff, who knows. We had them stopped a couple of times on the drive and that could have changed the whole tone of the game."

The Spartans, who were held without a first down until midway through the fourth quarter, scored the final points of the game when Paul Edwards scampered for an 85-yard touchdown as time expired. The game ended without an attempt at the extra point.

Dan Loughney and Luke Miller scored two touchdowns apiece for Hudson. Tyler Smrcina added a 42-yard touchdown run and Michael Hommes scored on a 92-yard run.

Hommes led the Raiders on the ground with 103 yards on six carries. Loughney added 72 yards, Smrcina had 51 yards on two carries and Miller was 3-of-3 passing for 78 yards.

Superior's Edwards rushed for 89 yards on three carries and caught a 37-yard pass. Spartan quarterback Spencer Urban was 7-of-16 passing for 120 yards.

Ben Erickson led Superior with 10.5 tackles. Anthony Valentine added 4.5 tackles and Nolan Holcombe, Trent Olson and Eisenmann had four each.

After Superior's early score, Hudson answered with an 11-play, 71-yard drive that ended with Loughney's 1-yard touchdown and Sam Somerville's extra-point kick. The drive included Hudson converting on a fourth-down play at the Spartan 31.

Miller's 1-yard touchdown and Somerville's kick gave Hudson a 14-6 lead after the first quarter.

The Raiders scored four touchdowns in the first half, including Miller's second 1-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter.

It went to 27-6 when Smrcina broke a tackle in the backfield, hit the right sideline then broke up the middle for a 42-yard touchdown.

After Eisenmann's fumble recovery, Superior pinned Hudson at the 8-yard line with a punt with 4:14 left in the second quarter. On the Raiders' first play Hommes ran left, took a sharp right and ran parallel with the line of scrimmage before breaking up field and running untouched for a 92-yard touchdown.

Hudson's final touchdown was Loughney's 4-yard run with 1:17 left in the first half.

"If we played them 10 times I really think that we'd beat them five, call me crazy, but I'm competitive, and so are these guys," DeMeyer said. "We're going to be fine. We're going to grow from this, and we'll get better."
