CUMBERLAND, Wis. -- Two people died and 16 others were injured -- one critically -- on Saturday in a collision between a car and a school bus carrying the Spooner High School volleyball team near Cumberland in far northwest Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin State Patrol reported that the two people who died, and the critically injured person, were in the car. No one aboard the bus was seriously injured, authorities said.

The crash happened at about 2:35 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 63 and Barron County Highway B just north of Cumberland. Initial reports indicated that the car was westbound on Highway B and failed to stop at Highway 63; it was struck on the driver's side by the northbound bus.
The driver and a passenger in the car were pronounced dead at the scene, the Patrol said. A second passenger was critically injured and transported to Cumberland Memorial Hospital and later flown to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
The school bus came to rest in a ditch partially filled with water, authorities said. The students, coaching staff and bus driver exited the bus through the rear emergency exit. They were transported to Cumberland Memorial Hospital, treated and released.
The names of the victims were not immediately released pending notification of family. The crash remains under investigation by the State Patrol.
