HAYWARD, Wis. - A 56-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man are dead following a shooting east of Hayward Wednesday night.
The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office received a report at 9:10 p.m. that a woman had been shot at a residence on Twin Lake Road. Responding officers found a 56-year-old woman on the scene who had been shot in the chest. She was transported to the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital but did not survive.
A short while later, a 58-year-old man’s body was found outside the residence. The sheriff’s office reported his death was the apparent result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The sheriff’s office identified the woman as Claudia R. Burgan, the incumbent Sawyer County Clerk of Court, who lived at the residence. The man was identified as Dennis L. Meyer, who authorities said also lived there.

The incident remains under investigation by the state of Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation and the Sawyer County Sheriff’s office.
